Colourware by Sebastian Bergne and Sophie Smallhorn

Wednesday 18 May 2011

Last week, designer Sebastian Bergne and colour artist Sophie Smallhorn presented a new collection of stacking tableware called Colourware at the Collect Contemporary Craft Fair in London. The project was inspired by the desire to challenge the traditional creative process: "The colour was the starting point for the project; we found a selection of colours we really loved and everything else followed on from there."

Collaborating for the first time, Sebastian and Sophie's chosen colours include Memphis-inspired speckled black, pale green, pure white, pillar box red and tangerine.

"It's also about the quality of the materials. I work mainly with mass production but this project is valid in its own context - not everything has to be accessible." The stacking plates are made in various sizes and materials including corian, sycamore, oak  and even solid brass, Sebastian told us that "each brass plate weighs in at around 13 kilos, very beautiful but extremely heavy!" The collection was on sale at the show and the designers are also taking commissions for bespoke Colourware collections.
